The mask had become another person. Tim wasn't Tim anymore, and the part that wasn't Tim didn't want to be. The mask had become sentient. It sat on the bottom of his backpack while his hands shook, lighting his cigarette. He let the match burn to him finger tips, the tiny flame licking his skin. Tim's breath grew shallow and quick, and he felt the mask in his bag like it was a stone. He ached to take the mask from his bag, slip it over his face and become his other person. He could hardly remember who he was anymore. He remembered the mask being forced onto his head, and then the occasional bits and pieces of little nonsensical mash ups of screams and people. But the darkness stands out the most. At first, he thought it was just blank parts of his memory, but the dark was so vivid and warm. Like clothing fresh from the dryer, he was reaching for the balmy black cloth in front of him, he clung like static. He felt flesh beneath the clothing, and it felt human for a moment.
